Before you fish
- Confirm your license & permits (snook, spiny lobster, etc.).
- Check current seasons, size & bag limits for your target species.
- Know local gear restrictions (e.g., circle hooks with natural bait in many reef fisheries, dehooking tools, descending devices).
- Mind area closures (reefs, sanctuaries, or restoration zones).
Protected & special-status species
Do not harvest or handle roughly. These species are generally no harvest and require careful release. Specific allowances change—verify with the official agency.
- Goliath Grouper - Protected. No typical harvest; special, limited programs may exist. Treat as catch-and-release only.
- Sawfish - Endangered. Do not remove from the water. Cut the line as close as safely possible if hooked.
- Tarpon - Highly restricted. Harvest requires a specific tag; most anglers practice catch-and-release only.
Seasons, size & bag limits
Limits are species- and region-specific and change often. Many reef fish and inshore species (e.g., red drum, snook, spotted seatrout, grouper/snapper complex) have different slots, seasons, or vessel limits. Always confirm details for your zone and date.
Required tools & best practices
- Dehooking tool and descending device for reef fish release.
- Non-stainless, non-offset circle hooks with natural bait in many saltwater fisheries.
- Keep fish in water when possible; minimize air exposure; support large fish horizontally.
Reporting & education
- Follow any mandatory harvest reporting programs for specific species/areas.
- Use official identification guides to avoid accidental harvest of look-alikes.
